The market on Tuesday
Broadcom stock rose 4.0% to $342.33 on Tuesday, October 27. The S&P 500 gained 0.6% to 7,722.60, which AP said left it within 1.2% of the all-time high it set earlier in October. The Nasdaq rose 1.18% to 26,477.81, and the Philadelphia semiconductor index gained about 3.6%.
Why Broadcom rose
On Monday, October 26, Bank of America, Blackstone, Citi and Morgan Stanley announced $63 billion in financing to pay for Broadcom AI chips (custom XPU accelerators) and networking gear for Anthropic, the company behind Claude. AP and CNBC both tied Broadcom's 4% gain on Tuesday to the deal. Reuters called it one of the largest debt deals tied to the AI buildout.
How the deal works
A newly formed special purpose vehicle will buy the Broadcom equipment and lease it to Anthropic. Deliveries are expected to start in calendar 2027. Broadcom is giving the vehicle residual value support equal to the first-lien portion of the financing, which protects the senior lenders. Anthropic also filed its S-1 to go public on October 26.
Other AI moves
CNBC said other chipmakers rose in sympathy. AMD gained 5.5% to about $560, Micron rose 2.8% and Nvidia added 0.9%.
