GPT-6.1 Terra is OpenAI's new fast, efficient model for computer use, announced Oct 26, 2026. It reads what's on screen, then clicks and types across apps to finish everyday work tasks.
What it does
OpenAI's examples include filling out forms, interpreting technical drawings, editing videos, and reading incoming invoices and entering their details into accounting software. In OpenAI's launch video, Terra builds a 3D model of a tram in a modelling app.
What OpenAI claims
OpenAI says Terra completes tasks over three times faster than both GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. On its internal benchmark of error-inducing prompts at low reasoning effort, the error rate fell from 53.6% with GPT-5.6 Terra to 16.7% with GPT-6.1 Terra. OpenAI also says it performs on par with GPT-6 Astra on its Agents' Last Exam computer-use benchmark at one-tenth the price per token.
Who gets it
OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Terra is available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex. Developers can use it in the OpenAI API as gpt-6.1-terra, at $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens.
The catch
All of these figures are OpenAI's own benchmarks. Independent tests haven't been published yet, and OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra remain the better choice for the most complex coding tasks.
