22 of 30: a humanoid robot learns to play dodgeball

RoboticsHumanoidResearch

An NUS study taught EngineAI's PM01 humanoid to dodge thrown balls: 22 of 30 dodged (73%) in real tests, with 6 hits and 2 falls. Ball tracking used motion capture, not onboard vision.

22 of 30 balls dodged (73%). That's the real-world result for EngineAI's PM01 humanoid in Humanoid Dodgeball, a study from researchers at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

The numbers

In real-robot tests, balls came in at 3 to 10 meters per second. The robot dodged 22, got hit 6 times and fell twice.

The big caveat

The balls were tracked by a motion-capture system in the lab, not by the robot's own cameras. So this is about fast whole-body dodging, not vision.

Real vs. simulation

The project video mixes simulation (the blue grid scenes, including comparisons with older methods) with real-robot clips in the mocap lab. Our clip labels which is which.

Would you play dodgeball against a robot?
