Andrej Karpathy says Claude built him a YouTube-style site in about two hours. It's called HackerTube.
How it was built
Opus 5.5 in Claude Code grabbed a Hacker News comments dataset. Sonnet then filtered it down to about 40,000 comments recommending YouTube videos. So the catalogue is AI-filtered from Hacker News recommendations, not hand-picked.
Those comments point to 6,454 videos from 2007 to 2026, across 150 topics.
What's different
Thumbnails come from each video's middle frame, not the uploaded one. "For You" recommendations work with no account; your history stays in your browser. There are keyboard shortcuts, and the data is exportable so others can build their own version.
Karpathy's part
He says he only made a Google Cloud API key, booted a VPS and bought the domain.
